Triumphant Youth Foundation (TYF), Shehu Usman Abubakar Foundation (SUAF), Federal Ministry of Youth and Sport Development (FMYSD), Gombe State Ministry of Youth Empowerment (GMOYE) and its partners to convene a three day Second Annual Arewa Youth Leadership Summit 2017 to essentially provide a platform for Northern youths to undertake a holistic approach to harness the real participatory power of young people and their readiness to get involve in the peace, security and de-radicalisation process, develop strategies and collaborations for effective youth engagement in counter violence extremism and de-radicalisation in the region and beyond. The summit is situated within the critical need for a coordinated, timely, strategic, assertive and impactful youth engagement in the community development process.
Working towards Sustainable Development Goals in the northern region requires a concerted, deliberate and timely effort if the challenges of our times are to be met. Ensuring northern region is able to sustain economic and social activities and most importantly, life, is more critical now than ever before. The security challenges caused by radicalization of youth in the region have negatively impacted on the peace, management of natural and human resources and sustainable activities built over many decades, devastating communities and livelihoods, the urgent need to enhance youth capacity and participation in de-radicalization process is more prominent. With the benefits of retrospective vision, this is an opportune moment to build on recent experience in the region and chart the way forward.
AGE: youth participants should be between 15-35 years of age.
EXPERIENCE AND LEADERSHIP: youth participants must demonstrate leadership in peacebuilding, reducing violence or countering extremism through examples of initiatives they have undertaken at the community or policy level in conflict, post-conflict or with widespread violence.
NETWORKS: some of the youth participants that are members of or affiliated with a youth-led organization, network or movement or demonstrate how they can disseminate the outcomes of the meeting to a wider network will be prioritized.
COMMITMENT: youth participants must demonstrate commitment to nonviolence, peaceful and inclusive societies, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Charter, Aims and Purposes of the United Nations.
LANGUAGE: English will be used for all plenary sessions.
LOGISTICS & SELECTION INFORMATION: Scholarships for travel & participation: the travel will be covered by participants, feeding and accommodation of selected youth participants will be covered. Once successful applications are selected, the Summit planning committee will be in touch to confirm who has been selected to be sponsored. No additional application is needed for sponsorship inquiries.
ARRIVAL AND TRAVEL: Participants are expected to arrive 16th July and to depart 19th July 2017.
