Kano Citizens’ Group trains schools principals on financial management

As part of its continues effort of improving condition of learning in schools towards better service delivery, the Kano Citizens Group on Education Service Delivery on Monday commenced a 2-day training workshop for principals of secondary schools from across Kano State on financial management.

The Group is a partnership between the Kano State Servicom Directorate and groups of civic organisations working in the area of education and service delivery in Kano state; it focuses essentially on addressing the 3 major challenges in the state’s education sector which are to do with congestion in classrooms, poor teacher quality and inadequate instructional materials.

“The workshop is appropriate and timely because its aim at training public schools administrators on financial management so as to become accountable, transparent and prudent in the management of their scarce resources under a competing demands,” says Abdullahi Musa, permanent secretary at the Kano State Servicom Directorate while delivering the opening remarks at the workshop

The event was hosted with the support of the Partnership to Engage, Reform and Learn (PERL) programme; a five-year governance reform programme of the UK Department for International Development (DFID) being implemented at states and federal level in Nigeria.

Musa called on parents whom he said were the biggest stakeholders in education of their wards to be more responsive to the educational needs of the wards by ensuring they always pay the levies of the Education Support Fund at the level of schools which he said will go a long way in assisting the daily running of the schools.

The event also featured the launch of the distribution of school chalk produced by the citizens’ group.
