World commemorates International Day of Peace 2018

The international community Friday commemorated this year`s International Day of Peace under the theme: “The Right to Peace – The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70.”

“It is time all nations and all people live up to the words of the universal declaration of Human rights, which recognizes the inherent dignity and equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human race. This year marks the 70th anniversary of that landmark document,” says Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General, in his message to the global community on the International day of peace 2018.

The United Nations (UN) International Peace Day is observed globally on 21 September of every year, to commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace by nations as well as to recognise the efforts of individuals, organizations and governments in promoting peaceful human coexistence.

In 1981, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, in a resolution sponsored by the United Kingdom (UK) and Costa Rica declared the International Day of Peace, as a day “dedicated to world peace and specifically the absence of war and violence.”

International peace day was first observed on Tuesday 21^st September, 1982 under the theme; “the right of peace of people.” The right to peace – as enshrined in article 3 of the Universal Declaration, states that, “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of persons.”

Various activities and events, centered on peace such as inter-faith dialogues, peace walks and a toast for peace are organized by Individuals, organizations and societies to celebrate the International day of peace, globally.

Recognizing the vital role of peace in achieving sustainable economic and social development for all, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16 – Peace, Justice and strong Institutions – calls for the global promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development.
