In commemoration of the 2019 International Youths Day, the Nigerian Youth Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Network, a coalition of youth-led civil society organizations focused on localizing the SDGs in Nigeria, is this weekend hosting series of nationwide youths dialogue on the theme: ‘Amplifying Youth Voices for the SDGs,’ across 21 Nigerian states.
“The theme of the regional dialogue ‘Amplifying Youth Voices for the SDGs’ is a clarion call to the Nigerian government and private sector leaders for urgent action to involve young people in finding solutions to the issues facing us like access to quality education, healthcare, decent jobs, a conducive and live-able environment with peace and accountability,” said a press statement by the coalition.
The International Youth Day (IYD) is observed annually on August 12, it was established by the of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in celebration of the 1.8 billion people in the world and as a day to highlight the role of young people in the pursuit of creating an inclusive and sustainable society for everyone.
“The consultation is [being] sponsored by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and development partners across the six geopolitical zones [of Nigeria] to drive accountability and the localization of the 2030 Agenda. The dialogue which will be the second in two years will have young people create a youth declaration and a two-year strategic roadmap on how government and the private sector can work with Nigerian youth as we usher in “a decade of delivery” on the SDGs by the year 2020,” the statement concluded.
The Nigerian Youth Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a national network of about 220 grassroots organizations dedicated to localizing the 2030 UN sustainable development agenda through advocacy and projects implementation with a focus on youth action. Founded in 2017, the Network has proven itself as the leading platform in advocacy for youth inclusion in the implementation of Agenda 2030 in Nigeria.
