International Day of Charity 2019: A day to remember Mother Teresa’s dedication to the downtrodden

The global community Thursday commemorated the 2019 International Day of Charity focused on raising awareness and recognizing the significant role of charities and philanthropists towards alleviating poverty and humanitarian crises the world over.

Every year, September 5 is globally observed as International Day of Charity. The event aims to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa “for [her] work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace.”

Mary Teresa popularly known as ‘Mother Teresa,’ a roman catholic nun was quoted to have said: “when a poor person dies of hunger, it has not happened because God did not take care of him or her. It has happened because neither you nor I wanted to give that person what he or she needed.”

The International Day of Charity was founded through a Hungarian initiative in 2011; and officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2012, to serve as a global platform for charity related activities including individuals, philanthropists, and volunteer organizations at local, national, and regional levels.
