The President of the Republic of Niger Mohamed Bazoum Tuesday received a delegation from the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) led by Ms Fatma Zahra Karadja, member of the APR Panel of Eminent Persons and lead panelist for the country review of Niger, whose recently concluded review report will be peer reviewed at the forthcoming 31st Ordinary Session of the APR Forum of Heads of State and Government.

Ahead of the upcoming session of the APR Forum on February 4, the APRM delegation were in Niamey to brief President Bazoum on the preliminary findings of the Niger review during APRM’s governance assessment mission, which lasted from November 15 to December 7, 2021, covering all regions of the Republic.

According to APRM guidelines, upon the conclusion of a country’s review, the Country Review Report (CRR) along with a clearly-defined and time-bound National Programme of Action (NPoA), are presented before the APR Forum for approval after which the CRR should be publicly tabled before key regional and sub-regional structures.

Ms Karadja said they had an “frank, rich and objective” conversation with the President on the findings of the review mission covering governance areas where the country was doing well and had potentials for significant improvement as well as were it was grappling with challenges and constraints, which she said, President Bazoum accepted “with great objectivity and foresight.”

“We hope that the presentation of this report, which will take place on February 4 before the Heads of State and Government of the APR Forum will be an opportunity for the President of the Republic to exchange ideas with his peers on best practices and possible areas of collaboration according to global best practices for self-accountability,” said Karadja.
