#Skill4girl4life: dRPC hosts experience sharing event for secondary schools principals

The development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC) Saturday hosted an experience sharing event for principals of secondary schools in Kano, Nigeria, in respect of how they were promoting entrepreneurship among girls in their schools

The event was part of dRPC’s Partnership to Strengthen Innovation and Practice in Secondary Education (PSIPSE) project also known as Skills4Girls4Life project. PSIPSE is a global program that seeks to increase secondary education access and improve learning outcomes for marginalized populations, being implemented in India, East Africa and Nigeria.

dRPC’s Skill4girl4life project is focused on providing entrepreneurship training for girls and strengthening the implementation of new secondary school curricula in girls’ schools in Nigeria. Its major goal is to expand empowerment opportunities for schoolgirls in the northwestern states of Kano and Jigawa and is being implemented with the support of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

dRPC is therefore supporting girls in secondary schools with vocational trainings to help them overcome sociocultural and economic barriers like poverty and early marriage which are militating against girls’ educational and overall socio-economic development in Nigeria.

The individual school principals at the event spoke on how they were working to promote entrepreneurship among girls in their respective schools acknowledging that factors like poverty and early marriage were responsible for the failure of many girls to continue with their education.

The principals therefore called on the government of Kano state to introduce empowerment programs for secondary schools girls to make them self-reliant so they will be able to support their secondary education as well as post-secondary education, themselves.
