HiLWA trains Kano mothers’ associations on girl-child enrolment, transition in school

The Kano High-Level Women Advocates (HiLWA), in collaboration with the Kano State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), with support from Global Partnership for Education /Nigeria Partnership for Education Project (GPE/NIPEP) and Girls Education Project 3 (GEP3), this week conducted an advocacy and sensitization training for 1500 members of mothers associations drawn from across 6 UNICEF focal LGAs of Kano state.

The mothers who were drawn from Dambatta, Gwale, Nassarawa, Kano Municipal, Ungogo and Sumaila LGAs and grouped into 18 clusters were, amongst others, sensitized on issues such as the rationale and objectives for establishing the mothers associations; the roles and responsibilities of mothers associations in reducing the numbers of out-of-school children; as well as effective strategies for advocacy and sensitization towards increased enrolment, transition and completion of especially girls in school.

The Permanent Secretary, Kano State Ministry of Education, Hajiya Lauratu Ado Diso, while monitoring the activity urged the mothers to remain firm in ensuring their children especially girls had good upbringing as well as emphasizing the importance of girls’ education to them.

While also addressing the mothers, chairperson of HiLWA, Prof. Aisha Abdul Ismail called on the mothers not to relent in their commitment towards supporting the girls to achieve their potential through education and assured them of HiLWA’s support towards ensuring access to education for especially girls. Prof Ismail said the HILWA team had earlier on paid advocacy visits to the district heads of the 6 UNICEF focal LGAs adding that more state-level advocacy visits would be conducted to key stakeholders, soon.
