SunMaP2 sensitizes Kano community on malaria prevention, control

The Support to the National Malaria Programme (SunMaP2), a UK Department for International Development (UK DFID) funded programme focused on malaria prevention, treatment, and other interventions at the community and service delivery levels, in collaboration with Kano State Ministry of Health, Tuesday held a town-hall in Warawa Local Government Area of Kano state.

The meeting was targeted at educating members the community on preventive measures against malaria and strategies of controlling malaria.  Implemented by Malaria Consortium, SunMaP2 aims to improve the planning, financing and delivery of sustainable malaria programmes across 165 local government areas in six states of Nigeria: Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Lagos, and Yobe.

While addressing the community members, Abdullahi Yakasai, a SuNMaP2 social mobilisation consultant, charged the members of the Warawa community against the breeding of mosquitoes, by ensuring proper waste disposal and keeping their environment clean. “Dirty environment attracts mosquitoes and is a good breeding ground for them; you have to ensure that you dispose of your refuse properly and keep your surroundings clean,” he told the community members.

During an interactive session, the community members identified as the challenges they faced in their fight against malaria; lack of clean water supply, irregular supply of electricity as well as the absence of adequate healthcare personnel at their primary healthcare facilities.

While responding to the challenges identified by the community members, Alfa Garba, the officer in charge of primary healthcare (PHC) facility in Warawa town, acknowledged the lack of enough manpower at their PHCs adding that they were advocating to the government to employ the available qualified healthcare personnel of Warawa LGA origin to boost their manpower.
